The Legal Requirement
As we discussed in our license guide, low-speed electric cycles (under 250W, 25km/h) do not require mandatory third-party motor vehicle insurance by law in India.
But Should You Get It?
Just because it's not mandatory doesn't mean it's not a good idea. Here's why you should consider coverage:
1. Theft Protection 🕵️♂️
E-bikes are valuable assets. If you park yours in public spaces often, theft insurance provides peace of mind. Voltebyk partners with insurers to offer plans that cover theft.
2. Accidental Damage 💥
Accidents happen. Whether it's a crash or a fire (rare, but possible), comprehensive insurance can cover repair or replacement costs.
3. Personal Accident Cover 🏥
Your safety is paramount. Many riding insurance plans include coverage for the rider's medical expenses in case of a fall.
How to Buy?
Many general insurance providers in India (like Digit, Acko, Bajaj Allianz) now offer specific "Bicycle Insurance" or "E-Bike Insurance" products. Premiums are usually very affordable, often less than ₹1000 per year.
