Lithium Battery Safety & Care
Mandatory safety information — read before charging or riding your CycleSpares electric cycle
🔥 Overheating, Swelling & Fire Response
Lithium-ion batteries carry substantial stored energy. Misuse, impact, or extreme temperature exposure can trigger thermal runaway — a self-sustaining overheating reaction that may result in fire or explosion.
If your battery becomes hot to the touch, swells visibly, emits smoke or a chemical smell, or ignites:
- • Cut power at once — unplug the charger or disconnect the battery from the cycle without touching the casing directly.
- • Relocate the bicycle outside to open ground, well away from vehicles, fuel, or buildings.
- • Never apply water to a lithium battery fire — it intensifies the reaction. Use sand, a dry-powder extinguisher, or CO₂. Call emergency services (112) if needed.
- • Keep others away; smoke from burning lithium batteries contains toxic compounds.
- • Retire the battery permanently after any thermal event. Contact CycleSpares support before resuming use of any component.
Legal notice: Purchasing a CycleSpares product constitutes acceptance that the user bears sole responsibility for safe handling, charging, and storage of the battery. CycleSpares by Voltebyk and its affiliates expressly deny liability for harm to persons, property, or third parties arising from battery misuse, neglect, or failure to comply with these instructions.
🏠 Where to Charge — Location Requirements
Select a purpose-appropriate, fire-safe charging location before every charging session:
- • Charge exclusively in a well-ventilated space — the area must have open airflow. Never charge inside closed cupboards, under stairs, or in enclosed rooms without ventilation.
- • Maintain a minimum 1-metre clearance between the charging battery and any combustible items — this includes paper, textiles, wooden furniture, foam, LPG cylinders, and petrol storage.
- • Avoid charging on soft furnishings such as beds, sofas, or rugs — these can trap heat and ignite if the battery overheats.
- • Having a dry-powder fire extinguisher readily accessible in or adjacent to your charging area is strongly recommended.
🔌 Charger Compatibility & Supervision Rules
Use only the CycleSpares-supplied charger or a direct replacement sourced from our authorised service network. Connecting any unapproved third-party, aftermarket, or fast-charge adapter to your battery is forbidden and constitutes misuse that voids all warranties.
- • Do not charge unattended or overnight. Remain present and attentive throughout the charging process. As soon as the charger indicates full charge, disconnect it without delay.
- • Allow a cool-down period of at least 45 minutes after riding before connecting the charger. Charging a hot battery accelerates wear and poses a safety risk.
- • Inspect the battery before each charge. A cracked casing, noticeable deformation, unusual smell, or visible swelling means the battery must not be charged — isolate it immediately and seek guidance from our support team.
Warranty impact: Use of an incompatible charger or a modified battery pack immediately and permanently voids the product warranty. CycleSpares accepts no responsibility for damage resulting from such misuse.
🌡️ Temperature Operating & Storage Ranges
Lithium-ion cells are highly sensitive to temperature. Working outside the specified ranges degrades capacity, shortens lifespan, and — in extreme cases — creates dangerous conditions.
- • Riding / operation: 0°C – 45°C ambient temperature.
- • Charging: 10°C – 40°C only. Below 10°C, metallic lithium deposits form on the anode, making the battery unsafe. Above 40°C, thermal degradation accelerates sharply.
- • Storage: 10°C – 25°C. A parked car in summer can reach 60°C or more inside — never leave your battery in a vehicle.
- • Hard limits: Exposure above 60°C or below -10°C is prohibited under all conditions and may cause immediate cell failure.
💥 After Impact, Crush, Puncture, or Flooding
Internal cell damage following physical trauma is often invisible from the outside. A battery that looks undamaged after an accident may still be structurally compromised and at risk of delayed thermal runaway.
- • Cease operation at once if the battery has been dropped from height, run over, punctured, or involved in a collision.
- • Do not plug in or charge an impact-damaged battery under any circumstances.
- • Place the battery outdoors on a hard, non-flammable surface (stone, concrete) and observe it for a minimum of 24 hours for any signs of heat generation, swelling, or gas emission.
- • Flood or submersion events: Never attempt to power on or charge a battery that has been submerged. Contact CycleSpares support immediately for safe disposal instructions.
- • Have the battery professionally assessed by an authorised technician before considering any further use.
💧 Water Resistance Limits
CycleSpares batteries and electrical systems carry an IP65 water-resistance rating, designed to handle rain and light splashing in normal use. This rating does not mean the product is waterproof.
- • No riding through standing water, flooded roads, or streams. Deep water entry can compromise the sealed enclosures.
- • No high-pressure or steam cleaning of the battery, motor housing, or controller enclosure — this will void water resistance and invalidate warranty.
Any evidence of water intrusion into sealed electrical components is readily identified during service inspection and falls outside the scope of warranty coverage.
📦 Extended Storage Recommendations
Planning to leave your CycleSpares unused for a month or longer? Correct storage protects cell chemistry and prevents irreversible capacity loss.
- • Store the battery at between 40% and 60% state of charge. Storing at 100% causes oxidative stress on the cathode; storing at 0% risks deep discharge that prevents recharging.
- • Check the battery every 30 days during storage. If the charge has dropped below 30%, top it up to the 40–60% range. Also look for any dimensional changes or odours indicating cell degradation.
- • Keep the battery in a cool, dry location — ideally between 10°C and 25°C — and away from windows, radiators, and flammable materials.
- • Where storage is shared with vehicles, tools, or fuel containers, remove the battery from the cycle and store it separately.
♻️ Safe Disposal & End-of-Life Handling
Lithium-ion batteries are designated hazardous material under Indian environmental law. Incorrect disposal — including placing batteries in household waste — is illegal, fire-prone, and environmentally harmful.
- • Do not discard in general waste, burn, or mechanically destroy a lithium battery for disposal.
- • Reach out to CycleSpares support or visit an authorised service point to arrange compliant battery return and recycling at no cost.
- • Disposal must comply with the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
- • Damaged, swollen, or leaking batteries pending disposal must be stored outdoors in a metal container partially filled with dry sand, isolated from any structures or combustibles, until collection by a certified e-waste handler.
⚖️ Voluntary Risk Acceptance
